How to Grow Shirogoma White Sesame Seeds

Prepare soil carefully to ensure that the small seeds grow properly. Start indoors six weeks before the last frost, or direct seed a month after the last frost. Soil should be warm before seedlings or seeds are put outdoors. Keep soil moist and fertilize as needed, but avoid overwatering. Control weeds carefully.

Harvesting Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds can take a little effort to harvest, but it is well worth it. Pods at the bottom of the plant will ripen first. Cut the stems with the ripe pods and dry on a flat surface. The pods will open and the seeds can be harvested by shaking them out over a container. Alternatively, wait until the pods dry out on the plant and cut the stalks. The pods will open by themselves, and the seeds harvested by the same method as above.

Culinary Tips

White sesame seeds have a milder flavor than black sesame seeds, but they are otherwise similar. Use whichever one you prefer in your favorite recipes. One of my favorite recipes is sesame chicken, which uses both sesame oil and dried seeds. Alternatively, roast the seeds and use as a crunchy, nutty topping for salads, vegetable dishes, or even ice cream!
