Growing Organic Dwarf Sugar Grey Snow Pea in the Vegetable Garden
Direct sow Organic Dwarf Sugar Gray seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, about 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date. Plant seeds 1 inch deep, spaced 2 to 3 inches apart, in rows 18 to 24 inches apart. Peas germinate best in cool soil and tolerate a light frost once established.
Provide a trellis, fence, or twiggy brush for the vines to climb, even though this is a compact, dwarf-type variety. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod set, and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease pressure. A light mulch helps retain moisture and keep roots cool as the weather warms.
Harvesting Dwarf Sugar Grey Snow Pea
Pick pods early and often to keep plants productive. For classic snow peas, harvest while pods are still flat, before the seeds inside swell. For a sweeter, plumper snap pea, leave pods on the vine a few extra days until you can feel the peas developing. Pick in the cool of the morning for the best flavor and store harvested pods in the refrigerator.

Dwarf Sugar Gray is a true heirloom, with records of its cultivation dating back to before 1773 and its first commercial sale by the D.M. Ferry Company in 1892.
It was selected and prized for its compact, early-producing vines at a time when most peas grown were tall, later-maturing types.
Beyond the harvest, this variety is grown for its ornamental purple-pink flowers, and the tender young shoots and blossoms are also edible, making it a favorite for garnishing salads and other dishes.
