How to Grow Progress Japanese Cucumber F1 Seeds
The Progress Japanese Cucumber is a monoecious flowering plant. It produces both male and female flowers. Male flowers should be removed upon blooming. Female flowers will have a bump on the stem that will become the fruit. This plant can grow up to six feet in length when supported. Supporting the Progress Japanese Cucumber will deter insects and disease making for a much more convenient harvest. Prepare seeds by soaking them for twelve hours. Choose a spot in your garden that gets at least six hours of sunlight every day. Plant seeds in the late part of spring or early summer. Cucumbers are not frost resistant. Keep soil moist and fertilize if necessary.
Harvesting Progress Japanese Cucumber
50-60 days to maturity. This is a dependable producer. Be sure to check the vine daily. Once female flowers have pollinated you can begin harvesting in as little as one week. In general, it is best not to wait for the Progress Japanese hybrid to fully mature as its flavor will become more bitter the longer it stays on the vine. Look for fruit that is firm to the touch and free of spots. Avoid yellowing cucumbers that have spots or feel soft. When the fruiting season is over cut this annual and add it to your compost pile.
Culinary Tips
Japanese cucumbers have a variety of culinary applications. These cucumbers are great for pickling, slicing, in salads or in salsas and summer ceviches. The fruit will last up to a week in your refrigerator drawer.
