How to Grow Garland Serrated Leaf Chrysanthemum Greens
Sow seeds directly into the soil in the early spring. Chrysanthemum greens can withstand a light frost, especially if covered. However, they will not grow well above 77℉. They’re not picky about soil quality or fertilization, although, they lush out better if given ideal conditions. Chrysanthemum greens do not do well in very wet conditions. To maintain a harvest throughout the growing season try successive sowing every 2-3 weeks.
Harvesting Garland Serrated Leaf Chrysanthemum Greens
Depending on when you harvest, the taste and use of the crop will be altered. Leaves can be harvested as small as 3-4 inches. You can even leave your plants to flower. Eat the leaves anytime in between. Provide clean cuts and they will continue to thrive all season.
Culinary Tips
This plant can be used as an herb, a vegetable, or tea depending on the time harvested. Chrysanthemum flower tea is typical in Chinese cousine. In Japan, the leaves are added to soups. They are also delightful when tossed fresh with other salad greens. The reality is that this vegetable is under-utilized in the west!
