Growing Italian White Sunflower Garden Seeds

Sunflowers generally grow so hardy and vigorously that there is little reason to start seeds indoors. Sow Italian White seeds directly after final frost in a sunny spot at the north end of the garden and shelter from strong winds. However, for early spring blooming, start Italian White seeds indoors 6-8 weeks prior. Seeds will take 7-14 days for germination. Early plants may need staking and wind protection. For direct sowing, plant 2-3 Italian White sunflower seeds ½" deep and 12" apart in average, loamy, and well-drained soil in full sun. Be sure to always plant taller varieties of sunflower at the north end of the garden because it will not take long for them to overshadow an entire garden if not properly planned. Italian White sunflowers are heat and drought tolerant, but susceptible to mold and mildew in poorly-drained soil. Adjust staking and wind protection as plants mature. Monitor regularly for aphids, but Italian White sunflowers have no serious pests or diseases. Italian White sunflowers mature in 90 - 110 days as 48-72" tall branching uprights with a 9-12" spread and 4" daisy-like blooms of canary-cream petals with a dark chocolate center.

Helianthus debilis is native to the prairies, plains, and meadows of western North America including temperate regions of Canada and Mexico. Many Native American tribes would traditionally plant sunflowers on the north end of their gardens as the "fourth sister" to their "three sisters" staple crops of corn, beans, and squash.
