Growing Edisto 47 Cantaloupe Melon Garden Seeds

The Edisto 47 cantaloupe melon is an excellent summer crop that thrives in the heat and in full sun. Be sure that your environment is already warm when sowing these seeds directly outdoors, otherwise, it may be most beneficial to sow the seeds indoors and transplant the seedling outside after two to four weeks. Sow the seeds with the pointed end directed downwards, and cover them with half an inch of soil. It can be helpful to loosen up the soil with a tool such as a pitchfork before sowing the seeds. Be sure that the soil is rich and sandy with a pH of 7 to 7.8. It can also be helpful to add some compost on top before sowing. As the vines grow, trim off smaller melon growths as well as flowers. This will promote the growth of the larger melons. Water the vine consistently, keeping your watering level low so as to keep the plant dry and free from diseases and mold. These melons are mature and ready to be harvested at around 85 days. They will be golden near their stem, and be easy to pull off of their vine. They will keep well for several weeks after being harvested.
