Growing NuMex Sandia Hot Pepper Vegetable Seeds
How to Grow NuMex Sandia Hot Peppers from Seed
Sow seeds indoors ¼" deep in rich soil. Transplant seedlings after 3 weeks to an area with full sun. They can be grown in containers or gardens.
As with most types of peppers, it's recommended to start the seeds indoors in early spring (to avoid late winter frosts and cold snaps), sowing them 1/4" deep and keeping them moist until germination.
NuMex Sandia hot pepper seeds typically germinate within 7 to 21 days. Once the seeds have sprouted, they can be moved into either larger pots or directly into the rich soil of a vegetable garden (with at least 18" of spacing between the individual plants).
NuMex Sandia Hot Peppers in the Vegetable Garden
NuMex Sandia Hot Peppers are a great addition to any garden, particularly if you live in a climate well-suited for growing peppers. Like most peppers, they need full sun and rich soil with good drainage in order to thrive.
They are 8" long and have dark green skin and flesh. Plants are 35" tall and have high yields.
Rated between 5,000 and 7,000 on the Scoville scale, the peppers grown from these seeds can be used fresh, roasted, or included in many different recipes. They are also a popular choice for ristras (decorative strings of dried peppers) due to their bright red color when fully mature.
Harvesting NuMex Sandia Hot Peppers
Plants grown from these seeds will produce peppers that are 5 - 9" and slightly curved, with color turning from green to red as they mature.
Additionally, while these peppers can be harvested when green they gain more heat as they mature and the color reddens. Because of this, they are typically more popular when red because both the bright color and the greater heat allow for greater versatility when cooking.
As with most types of peppers, it's often best to snip the fruit from the plant with shears (leaving a small amount of stem behind on the plant).
